The recipe for how I prepare Dog food, the idea if to have 1/3 protein, 1/3 veggies, and 1/3 grain (for the minerals & fiber).

  • 1 whole young chicken with giblet, they sell whole chikens for less than $10 at Trader Joes, and presumably most super markets
  • 1 pound of Lean ground beef, I go with 90% lean to not add too many fats. The food will have plenty of chicken fats and fish fats (omega-3)
  • 1/4 pound of Salmon, I buy left overs from the nearby asian market for less than $5
  • 1/4 of Kabucha or Pumpkin
  • 1 sweet potato
  • 2 carrots, carrots come in many sizes, but basically I have the same ratio of carrot and sweet potato.

Step 1
  • Take the giblet out of the chicken, then put it into a pot or pressure cooker.
  • Add 3-cups of water, then cook for 45-60min, for a pressure cooker, probably twice in a normal pot.
    • The chicken will come right off the bone at this point, and you can “pull” the meat, it’s similar to pulled pork.
Step 2
  • Cut the vegetables (Pumpkin, Sweet potato, Carrots) into small bite sizes (appropriate for your dog), 1/4-1/2 inch is probably good.
  • Cook the vegetables into a pot with the 2/3rds of the chicken broth for 30min

Step 3
  • Cook the ground beef in 1/3 of the chicken broth 5-10min

Step 4
  • Drain the broth (we’re going to use it one more time!) then mix the beef, chicken and veggies with a spoon in a big pot

Step 5
  • Cook 1.5 cups of Oats in the chicken broth, we want to capture all the flavors!
  • Add 4 table spoons of bonemeal (this is for calcium and other minerals)
  • This step takes about 10 minutes, however keep an eye on the pot, and mix as needed.

Step 6
  • Now mix the cooked oats (which should have absorbed most of the both), the remainder broth with the meats and veggies.

Step 7
  • Store in ziplock bags in the freezer (the above lasts 2-4 weeks, depending on how much your dog eats)
