Any thing they touch with their beak becomes stone. Lasts about 24 hours. However they continue pecking their works after the fact, so unless rescued someone may remain petrified for years.
They can see and interact with the ethereal plane, seeing and even petrifying ghosts and spirits.
The petrified forest is underground, there is jasper in abundance. The jasper here is said to have protective abilities and to drive off bad luck.
